How a Three-Finger Typist Finally Conquered the Keyboard

You type at 40 to 50 words a minute. You think at 200. That means most of your writing life is spent operating at 25 percent capacity.

In ninth grade, my school made typing class mandatory. The week before it started, I broke my arm.

I sat through the entire semester unable to type a word. When the cast came off, everyone else could hit the home row without looking. I couldn’t. I never caught up.

For the next four decades, I hunted and pecked with three fingers. That’s how I wrote fifteen books. That’s how I wrote more than two thousand blog posts. Every one of them, one three-finger tap at a time.

I tried dictation software along the way. Dragon, and every descendant that followed it. I gave up on all of them. The accuracy was bad enough that I spent more time editing than I would have spent typing. It was more trouble than it was worth.

Cognitive scientists call this dual-task interference: when your brain handles a mechanical task, it can’t fully devote its resources to the conceptual work running alongside it.2 Every pause to find the right key pulls bandwidth away from the idea forming behind it.

Voice typing bypasses that interference. When you speak, your words arrive at thinking speed. The gap between idea and expression collapses.

Freedom #2: Capture Every Idea Before It Escapes

Working memory doesn’t hold ideas in a waiting room. It discards them.

The classic research from Peterson and Peterson showed that short-term memories not encoded quickly begin to vanish in as little as fifteen to twenty seconds.3 An idea that feels vivid at 10:03 AM is often gone by 10:05 if something interrupts it. Typing is slow enough to let that happen regularly. By the time you’ve finished one sentence, the next thought has faded.

Dictation keeps pace with your thinking. You speak the idea the moment it arrives, no context-switching, no gap between forming a thought and capturing it. I draft emails, rough outlines, and long Slack messages now while walking, because the bottleneck isn’t there anymore.

The best ideas don’t always arrive at your desk. They come in the car, on a walk, between meetings. AI dictation means they make it into your workflow instead of dissolving into the day.

Freedom #3: Write Without the Editing Tax

This is the freedom that separates AI dictation from everything that came before it.

I tried Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I tried every tool that followed it. The problem was always the editing tax. The best AI dictation software removes the friction that makes writing feel like work. When I sit down to respond to a message now, I’m not thinking about typing. I’m thinking about what I want to say. That’s a different relationship with written communication—and it compounds across every email, document, and article you produce.

What’s Possible Now

If you’ve written off dictation because a previous tool burned you, I understand. I was one of those skeptics. I’d had enough bad experiences that I nearly didn’t give the new generation a try.
