In Build Custom Software in Days, Not Months, I shared four reasons why vibe coding changes everything for business owners like you. You might want to start there if you haven’t read it.

Building your first app feels like standing at the base of Everest. But here’s the truth: with AI tools, you’re not climbing—you’re taking a helicopter. This playbook walks you through building a functional app in days, not months, without writing a single line of code yourself.

What you’ll accomplish:

  • Turn a business problem into a working software application
  • Build your app using AI-powered development tools
  • Publish your app to the web with a custom domain
  • Create professional sales copy if you’re monetizing it

Time investment: 2-4 hours for your first basic app, plus refinement time based on your vision.

Cost: $0-20/month for Replit starter plan, plus optional credits for advanced features.

Step 1: Set Up Your Project Folder

Create a dedicated folder on your computer and name it after your app’s working title. You’ll accumulate multiple files during development—your Product Requirements Document, screenshots, notes, and iterations. Staying organized now saves frustration later.

Pro tip: Use a descriptive name like “CustomerFeedbackApp” or “InventoryTracker” rather than generic names like “NewApp” or “Project1.”

Step 2: Identify the Specific Problem You’re Solving

Every successful app solves one clear problem exceptionally well. Not five problems adequately—one problem exceptionally.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s costing my business time or money right now?
  • What repetitive task drives me or my team crazy?
  • What customer pain point could software address better than our current solution?

Example problems that make good first apps:

  • “We waste 5 hours weekly tracking project status across email and Slack”
  • “Customers can’t schedule consultations without playing phone tag”
  • “We manually calculate commission splits in spreadsheets prone to errors”

Warning: Resist building the “Mother of All Apps” that does everything. That’s how you spend six months building nothing useful. Pick one problem. Nail it. Then expand.

Step 3: Create Your Product Requirements Document (PRD)

This document is your app’s blueprint. It forces clarity before you build, which prevents expensive do-overs later.

Don’t let the term intimidate you. Use my custom GPT, PRD Creator Pro that writes this for you through a simple interview process. It asks one question at a time, drawing out your vision for the app and how it works.

Here’s how:

  1. Access PRD Creator Pro.
  2. Click Get Started.
  3. Answer each question thoughtfully—the GPT won’t let you be vague
  4. Once complete, prompt: “Put this document on a canvas“
  5. Download the Markdown file (.md) to your project folder

Time investment: 20-30 minutes. This feels tedious, but it’s the difference between a focused app and a confused mess.

What you’ll get: A clear document describing exactly what your app does, who uses it, what features it includes, and what success looks like.

Step 4: Sign Up for Replit

Replit is your AI-powered development environment. It’s where you’ll build, test, and publish your app. (Full disclosure: that’s my referral link—we both get $10 in credits if you use it.)

Don’t be intimidated by the interface. You have two learning paths:

  • Option A (My approach): Jump in and learn by doing. The interface is intuitive enough that you’ll figure it out as you build.
  • Option B (If you prefer structure): Watch Replit’s “Getting Started with Replit” video series first.

What to expect: The free tier lets you experiment. The starter plan ($20/month) gives you more computing power and storage. Start free, upgrade when you need it.

Step 5: Build Your App

This is where vibe coding happens. You describe what you want, Replit builds it.

Here’s the process:

  1. Upload your PRD: Click the paperclip icon and attach your Product Requirements Document
  2. Select a theme: Choose from the dropdown or leave it on “Auto” (you can change this later)
  3. Give the build command: Type: “Build the app described in the attached PRD“
  4. Hit Start →

Now walk away. Replit takes 15-45 minutes to build the initial version depending on complexity. Check your email, grab coffee, do literally anything else while it works.

Understanding the interface:

  1. Left column: Your conversation with Replit
  2. Right column: Live preview of your working app
  3. Bottom left chat box: Where you request changes, ask questions, or troubleshoot

Making improvements:

Treat Replit like you hired a developer. Tell it what you want:

  • “Move the submit button to the right side”
  • “Change the color scheme to match our brand colors: #2C5282 and #ED8936”
  • “Add a confirmation message after users submit the form”
  • “The date picker isn’t working on mobile—please fix”

Use screenshots liberally. Tools like CleanShot X let you capture exactly what needs fixing. Upload the screenshot and say, “See this layout issue? Please fix it.”

Setting expectations: You’ll have a working app in 1-2 hours. But you’ll spot improvements and features you want to add—that’s normal and fun. This refinement phase is where you’ll invest the real time. My app Promptlee took about 40 hours and $250 in credits to get right.

Step 6: Publish Your App

Once you’re satisfied with your app, make it live.

The process:

  1. Click “Publish“ (or “Republish“ if you’ve published before)
  2. Your app goes live immediately at a Replit URL

Customizing your domain:

  1. Click the “Domain“ button to:
  • Customize your Replit subdomain (myapp.replit.app → customername.replit.app)
  • Purchase a custom domain through Replit
  • Connect an existing domain you own

Why buy through Replit: They handle all the technical setup automatically—hosting, nameservers, DNS records, SSL certificates. No technical knowledge required.

Step 7: Write Sales Copy (If You’re Monetizing)

If you’re selling access to your app, you need a compelling sales page. Here’s the fastest path:

  1. Create a Claude project and upload your PRD as a project file
  2. Use PromptGenie to generate a sales page prompt
  3. Paste that prompt into Claude to generate professional sales copy
  4. Copy the sales copy into Replit and ask: “Create a sales page using this copy“

Like the app itself, you’ll refine through conversation until the sales page matches your vision.

Alternative: Ask Replit to create the sales page directly from your PRD. It won’t be as polished as Claude’s copywriting, but it’s faster if you just need something functional.

What to Expect

Your first app won’t be perfect. That’s okay—it’s not supposed to be. You’re learning a new skill, and the beauty of vibe coding is that improvements are just a conversation away.

When you get stuck:

  • Ask Replit to explain what went wrong
  • Describe the problem in plain English: “The form isn’t saving data”
  • Use ChatGPT or Claude as coaches: “I’m building an app in Replit and having trouble with [specific issue]. What should I try?”

The real breakthrough: You now have a skill that lets you turn business problems into software solutions without hiring developers or learning to code. That’s the competitive advantage.
